JB Custom Woodcraft

Custom furniture, cutting boards, and wood crafts

All-natural, free-range, fat-free, sugar-free, vegan, and naturally high in fiber!

I make custom furniture, cutting boards, and utensils. I prefer using natural finishes to allow the beauty of the wood to shine. Utensils and cutting boards are finished with food-safe products including mineral oil and natural bee's wax. Furniture is finished with durable, water repellent products to protect your investment for years to come.

Cutting boards come in all shapes and sizes and with many different varieties of hardwoods. When choosing a board, it is important to understand how it will be used and which type of board is best suited for that purpose.  Wood has two "faces" or grains: end-grain (the horizontal grain of a tree - think of the rings of a tree that you see when it is cut down - this is the end-grain) and face- or edge-grain (the vertical grain of a tree).  Cutting boards are grouped into two types: cutting and serving.

Cutting boards: Boards designed for cutting fruits, veggies, and proteins are typically end-grain.  The end-grain is easier on knife blades and is the preferred board for professional chefs.

Serving boards: Boards designed for serving food or other items and not necessarily for cutting.  These boards can be end-grain or face-grain.  While face-grain is perfectly safe for cutting, it will show cut marks over time. Proper care and maintenance of the board will reduce this and the board can also be resurfaced if needed. Charcuterie and butter boards also fall into this category.

I can make boards any size and use any number of hardwood species.  Most of the boards I make are in the 12”x18”x1” range, but they can be made larger, smaller, thicker, or thinner. Cutting boards vary in price depending on the size, style, complexity, and types of wood used.  I can also engrave anything into a board and/or burn an image or wording onto a board.
